Fiji’s contribution to climate change is almost negligible at less than 1% of global CO2 emissions. However, it is at the forefront of its impacts. Therefore we are willing to take action and increase awareness on climate change through EarthHour. Fiji’s participation sent a message to the cities and countries of the developed world that emit far more greenhouse gases: If the people of Fiji are doing their part, so can they.

Suva, the vibrant capital city of the Fiji Islands, showed its commitment by switching off for EarthHour. We were joined by Lautoka City on the Western side of Fiji and the Lami Town Council also jumped on board. The incredible response across the island created awareness in a region which recent polls have shown is relatively uninformed about climate change, but which is particularly vulnerable to its affects.

Suva is located on the southeast coast of the island of Viti Levu. It is a multiracial city comprising of Fijians, Indians, Europeans, Part-Europeans, Chinese, & other pacific Islanders. Businesses and individuals alike are showing tremendous commitment in the capital city to take a stand against climate change. Suva was one of the first cities globally to switch off for EarthHour 2008!!
