Santa Cruz - 8pm March 29, 2008

Santa Cruz de la Sierra were the city in Bolivia that participated in Earth Hour 2008. WWF Bolivia had partnered with CRE (Rural Electrification Cooperative), the company that generates and distributes energy in Santa Cruz, as well as with the Santa Cruz de la Sierra Municipal Government and the national newspaper El Deber.
The goal for Earth Hour Santa Cruz 2008 was to work with these three allies towards organizing a Symbolic Act on March 29th, between 19,30 and 21,00 h, which consisted of turning off the lights of Santa Cruz’s main plaza, with the participation of the main local authorities, lead by the Mayor, WWF Bolivia’s Country Representative and CRE’s President. After some speeches, and once the lights were turned off at 20,00 h, there were be artistic presentations, such as music and fire joggling acts. There was also informative banners, fact sheets and spokespersons promoting Earth Hour’s message.
On March 19th, a press conference was held in the Mayor’s office, in order to announce the Earth Hour activities to local population, with massive press attendance. WWF and CRE also participated. An event like this, in an over one million inhabitants city, aims to prove that each one of us can make a difference with a simple action: turn off the light, electric and electronic appliances for one hour now, and routinely afterwards.
People and companies were excited about this great opportunity, and participation grew by the day.
WWF, the city of Santa Cruz, CRE and El Deber invited all households and companies to take part in Earth Hour by turning off their lights for one hour on March 29th, 2008.
